Hawai’i Interpreting Services (HIS) receives many inquiries from people curious about what is required to work with us, the interpreting and Deaf communities, and general island-life information. The information below may be helpful. The greatest concentration of Deaf clients and interpreters is on the island of Oahu. Most work is also here in Oahu, however, there is a need for services on the other islands.
Hawaii Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (HRID) Welcome Wagon: The HRID Welcome Wagon has been devised as online forum for making connections and sharing resources, particularly for those incoming or visiting professionals to our community that would like get a firsthand perspective from a long-time resident about living and working in Hawaii. Anyone interested in joining the forum may contact hrid.secretary@gmail.com for more information. HRID encourages members to join the Welcome Wagon as ambassadors! Every one of us has something unique and valuable to bring to the discussion. WHAT ETHICAL STANDARDS ARE YOUR SERVICE PROVIDERS EXPECTED TO ABIDE BY?
Interpreters who are members of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID) must abide by the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct
Captioners certified by the National Court Reporters Association must abide by the NCRA Code of Ethics.
Computer Assisted Notetakers (CAN) must be able to type at least 60 wpm; See link for more information: www.tap.gallaudet.edu/Captions/Remcan/

HOW DO WE SCHEDULE?
There are times when we have more requests than available interpreters, and there are times when requests are few and far between. As with any profession, the interpreters with the greatest skills will always be in highest demand. The Disability and Communication Access Board provides a recommended fee schedule for interpreters under Hawai’i Administrative Rules Title 11 Chapter 218. K-12 Educational Interpreters are hired directly by the State of Hawai’i.
